About Us

Aurora College opened as a co-educational Year 7 to 13 school in 2005 so that the adolescents and young adults of South Invercargill could access a high quality secondary education in their local environment. Therefore, Aurora College aims to be the school of choice for the young people in its neighbourhood and a central focus of its community. We have no desire to become a large school, instead we want to be a very good smaller school in which all students get the chance to be known and to shine in their own unique way.

In the relatively short time our school has existed much has been achieved and I am very proud to be its principal. Relationships, pastoral care, and high expectations are key ingredients in the culture of our school.

Aurora College’s philosophy is based upon the establishment and maintenance of strong, positive relationships between its students, staff, and community. Research shows that constructive relationships between students and staff are vital for success. When employing staff a special emphasis is placed upon their ability to form such relationships with our students, their parents/caregivers, and one another.

Year 7 to 10 students have the extra learning support and pastoral care offered by a homebase teacher for the majority of their lessons while also benefiting from some specialist teaching and the use of specialist facilities. This homebase structure provides students with a solid start on which they can build as they progress through our school. We established our full-service centre, links@aurora, so that our students and their families could have better access to a wide range of agencies onsite.

The best advocate for a school is its final product. We have high expectations of our students and strive to ensure our school leavers are well prepared for the rapidly changing world they are going into and that they have developed the qualities they need for a successful future. Our school is structured with the learner of today and responsible citizen of tomorrow in mind.
