About the scholarship

The Scholarships were established in 2004 and are funded by the University of Auckland. These regulations also apply to faculty and externally funded Summer Research Scholarships that are administered by the central University of Auckland Summer Research Scholarship Scheme.

The main purpose of these Scholarships is to give current international and domestic university students an opportunity to experience research, and to thereby encourage them to pursue postgraduate study at the University of Auckland.

How To Apply

Scholarship applications will usually open around six weeks before the closing date. Please read the regulations carefully to be sure you are eligible before you apply.

Entry requirements

'- Students who will have completed at least two years of equivalent full-time study in an undergraduate degree at the time of take-up of award are eligible for consideration for a Summer Research Scholarship, provided that the student satisfies any additional study requirements or restrictions specified under Notes V-VII, and that the student either a) is enrolled in an undergraduate degree at a New Zealand University at the time of scholarship application, or b) is enrolled, at the time of scholarship application, in a postgraduate diploma or postgraduate Bachelor (Honours) degree at a New Zealand university as permitted under Notes III-IV, or c) was or is enrolled in an undergraduate degree at an international institution in the same calendar year as the scholarship application.

  • A student must have a Scholarship GPA/GPE of 6.00 or above over their two most recent years of full-time study (or equivalent) to be considered for a scholarship; Maori or Pacific students are required to have a GPA/GPE of 5.50 or above over their two most recent years of full-time study (or equivalent) in order to be considered for a scholarship (see Note X).
  • A student must have a clearly defined project and suitable supervisor willing to supervise the project. Faculties may offer a predetermined list of supervised projects or require the student to devise the project (see Note XII).
  • A student who has previously held a Summer Research Scholarship is not eligible to hold a second scholarship, except as allowed under Note VIII.
  • Externally funded scholarships may apply additional eligibility criteria as approved by the office of the DVC (Research).
