Elman and Alfred Poole Southland Boys' High School and Southland Girls' High School Science Scholarships

Elman and Alfred Poole Scholarships are to be awarded to students graduating from Southland Boys' High School and Southland Girls' High School who intend to pursue a degree and career in science. These scholarships were established by Dr Elman Poole in 2010. Elman and Alfred were sons of Philip Poole, a well-known cabinetmaker and musician in Invercargill in the 1920s. Philip encouraged his sons to get a good education at Southland Boys' High School and the University of Otago and both graduated in Medicine. Alfred settled in Invercargill where his contribution to cardiology as well as the local community was recognized with a CBE before his death in 2005. Elman specialised in Neurology with scholarships at Oxford University and posts in London at Institute of Psychiatry and National Hospital for Nervous Diseases. After a Rockefeller Fellowship to the Mayo Clinic, he returned to the Radcliffe Infirmary in Oxford where he retired. Dr Poole passed away on 25 June 2019 aged 93 years.
