About the scholarship

To apply for this scholarship, please use the UC School-Leaver Scholarships 2023 application form. Applications open 20 June 2022 and close 15 August 2022.This scholarship recognises high academic achievement, as well as leadership potential and involvement in community and/or cultural activities, amongst intending first-year students at Te Whare W?nanga o Waitaha | University of Canterbury.Value/Benefits:a. Financial assistance at a value of $6,000; andb. the opportunity to participate in a UC-sponsored leadership programme Level of Study: School Leaver (First year undergraduate) Closing Date: 11:59 pm (NZT) 15 August (Applications open approximately 8 weeks before this date) Tenure: One year Number Available Annually: Up to 70, distributed as follows:(a) All-round Excellence category: Up to 50 scholarships;(b) Student Leader category: Up to 20 scholarships;(c) At least two scholarships are reserved for students who identify as Rainbow;(d) At least two scholarships are reserved for students who will be registering with the University's Equity & Disability Service.Applicable Enrolment During Tenure: The scholarship is tenable during full-time enrolment in the first year of any undergraduate degree programme at the University of Canterbury Citizenship/residency requirements: Must be a citizen of Aotearoa New Zealand or Australian, hold an Aotearoa New Zealand residence class visa, or be an international student studying at secondary level in Aotearoa New Zealand For more information, please read the regulations for this award: click here.Applicants must not have been enrolled in a degree programme at any tertiary institute.*Participation in STAR courses, community education courses offered by tertiary institutions, orientation, or general interest programmes run by tertiary institutions for secondary school students does not preclude application for this award.Applicants must be:Aotearoa New Zealand or Australian citizens; orholders of Aotearoa New Zealand residence class visas; orinternational students studying at secondary level in Aotearoa New Zealand.Selection will be based on:quality of achievement at NCEA Level 2 or in equivalent university entrance qualifications (achievement must be at least NCEA Level 2 at Merit level or equivalent); andevidence of leadership potential;involvement in community and/or cultural activities; andstrategic objectives of the University.The scholarships are available as follows:All-round Excellence category: Up to 50 scholarshipsStudent Leader category: Up to 20 scholarshipsAt least two scholarships are reserved for students who identify as RainbowAt least two scholarships are reserved for students who will be registering with the University's Equity & Disability Service. * For applicants who have held senior leadership positions in Aotearoa New Zealand schools.Applicants may be considered under both categories, but they are not eligible to hold more than one UC Horomata Scholarship.In any year, the number of UC Horomata Scholarships awarded to applicants from any one secondary school is limited to four.The Selection Committee may consider distribution amongst students in such a way that diversity of recipients with regards to their UC colleges, schools, departments, and programmes is supported.The scholarship must be taken up in the year following the year of application.
