The Judge had a distinguished legal career, which included appointments as Acting Attorney-General in Western Samoa at the time of its independence and Director of Public Prosecution in Hong Kong. His judicial career commenced as Magistrate in Western Samoa and culminated in his membership of the Court of Appeal in Hong Kong. He also sat from time to time in the Supreme Court of Brunei.Valerie Penlington also studied Law at the Te Whare W?nanga o Waitaha | University of Canterbury and was awarded her LLB in 1964. She was admitted as a barrister and solicitor of the Supreme Court of Aotearoa New Zealand in 1968. In 1979 she gained her PCLL from Hong Kong University and was called to the Hong Kong bar in 1981. She is the author of the text- book An Introduction to Hong Kong Law.
