Leigh and Judith Pownall Scholarship (School-Leaver Scholarship)

Applications open 20 June 2022 and close 15 August 2022.The purpose of this scholarship is to support undergraduate Geography and Music majors at the University of Canterbury. Value/Benefits: Financial assistance at a value of $5,000Level of Study: School Leaver (First year undergraduate) Closing Date: 11:59 pm (NZT) 15 August (Applications open approximately 8 weeks before this date) Tenure: One year Number Available Annually: Up to eight, with up to four for applicants intending to major in Geography, and up to four for applicants intending to major in Music Applicable Enrolment During Tenure: The scholarship is tenable during full-time enrolment in a first year of a programme for an undergraduate degree at the University of Canterbury with a major in Geography and/or Music Citizenship/Residency Requirements: Must be a citizen of Aotearoa New Zealand, or hold an Aotearoa New Zealand residence class visa For more information, please read the regulations for this award: click here.Selection will be based on:academic achievement, as indicated by quality of achievement at NCEA Level 2, or equivalent university entrance qualification, or such other evidence of academic merit; andevidence of leadership potential; andinvolvement in sporting, cultural, and community activities.The scholarship was established in 2012 from a bequest of Mrs Judith Pownall (nee Whittaker), widow of Leigh Pownall, for the ?advancement of education? in Geography and Music at the University. Leigh Pownall was Professor of Geography at the University, and is considered ?the father of urban geography in New Zealand?. He became the University?s youngest vice-chancellor in 1961 and led the University with great efficiency until 1966, during a period of enormous growth. The strength and standing of the University today are considered to be ?a tribute to the legacy of Dr Pownall?s tenure as vice-chancellor?. Dr and Mrs Pownall were married for 65 years, lived happily in Christchurch for 22 years, and shared a keen lifetime interest in music and the arts. They had a wide circle of friends and worked tirelessly together to improve and cement the relationship between the University and the city.
