About the scholarship
The purpose of this scholarship is to recognise and support top students from the Kuching Division, Sarawak, Malaysia who are studying in an undergraduate degree programme at the University of Canterbury.Value/Benefits: Financial assistance at a value of $10,000Level of Study: School Leaver (First year undergraduate); Undergraduate Closing Date: 11:59 pm (NZT) 31 October (Applications open approximately 8 weeks before this date) Tenure: One year Number Available Annually: One Applicable Enrolment During Tenure: The scholarship is tenable during full-time enrolment in a programme for an undergraduate degree at the University of Canterbury Citizenship/Residency Requirements: Must be a citizen of Malaysia. May not also be a citizen of New Zealand or Australia, hold a New Zealand residence class visa, or be an Australian Permanent Resident Special Requirements: Must have been born in Kuching Division, Sarawak, Malaysia, and/or have attended a primary or secondary school in the Kuching Division for at least five years For more information, please read the regulations for this award: click here.Applicants must:have been born in the Kuching Division, Sarawak, Malaysia, and/or have attended a primary or secondary school in the Kuching Division for at least five years; andbe citizens of Malaysia*. They cannot also be citizens of New Zealand or Australia, holders of New Zealand residence class visas, or Australian Permanent Residents; andhave completed, or be completing, a university entrance qualification; andapply for admission to the University of Canterbury by 31 October in the year of application, if they are not already continuing students at the University.* Applicants with Permanent Resident status in Malaysia are not eligible.Selection will be based on:academic achievement; andevidence of leadership potential, including, but not limited to, participation in cultural, sporting, and/or community activities.In selecting between candidates of equal merit, financial need is also considered.The scholarship was established in 2016. It partially replaces the Malaysian Alumni City and Regional Scholarships, which had been established at the University in 2012. The scholarship is funded thanks to the generous support of the Kuching UC Alumni Chapter. The University?s Kuching Malaysian alumni recognise the contribution their University of Canterbury degrees have made to their own lives and to those of their families, and they fund this scholarship to help a new generation of students from Kuching to attend their alma mater.
