The purpose of this prize is to recognise excellence in students of Drama at the University of Canterbury. Professor McNaughton taught drama throughout his 38-year career at the University of Canterbury. He was recognised as the leading expert on New Zealand theatre, and he also published widely on post-colonial theatre. For many years, Professor McNaughton was a theatre reviewer for The Press. He was an enthusiastic supporter of local theatre groups, including the University?s Dramasoc.
