About the scholarship

The purpose of this prize is to recognise excellence in music performance by students of the University of Canterbury.Value/Benefits: The current value of the prize is $500 Level of Study: Undergraduate; Honours; Master's Closing Date: Application not required Tenure: Not applicable Number Available Annually: One Applicable Enrolment During Tenure: Not applicable Citizenship/Residency Requirements: Not applicable For more information, please read the regulations for this award: Click here.One prize will be available annually to students who, in that year, were enrolled in a specified programme for an undergraduate or postgraduate Music degree2 at the University and completed one course or more in music performance.The qualifying degrees are the BA with a major in Music, the MusB, the MusB(Hons), and the MMus.The current courses are MUSA141, MUSA142, MUSA241, MUSA242, MUSA341, MUSA342, MUSI241, MUSI341, MUSI473, and MUSI692.Preference will be given to candidates who show prowess in the execution of works by Beethoven.This prize was established in 2014 from a bequest of Mrs Hester Bernice (?Nice?) Hewitt, n?e Gentles, 1917?2007. Mrs Hewitt was a resident of Christchurch, a mountain climber, and an accomplished pianist. She was both a student and staff member of the University of Canterbury, where she studied Music, graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree, and became the first woman to hold the office of Deputy Registrar.
