About the scholarship
Freyberg Scholarships are awarded to encourage graduate study into areas relevant to national security. Study should be undertaken at a recognised institution in New Zealand or an Asia-Pacific country, including Canada and the United States. This scholarship is offered by Universities New Zealand (UNZ) and applications can be made on their website by following the link below.Value/Benefits: Financial assistance with the costs associated with university study. The emolument will be determined by the Selection Board Level of Study: Postgraduate; Master's; Doctoral Closing Date: 1 October (NZT) (via the UNZ website) Tenure: One year Number Available Annually: Varies Applicable Enrolment During Tenure: Please refer to the regulations Citizenship/Residency Requirements: Must be a citizen of New Zealand, or hold a New Zealand residence class visa For more information, or to apply, click here.The scholarships are open to applications from New Zealand citizens or permanent residents who meet the following academic requirements:they should normally have obtained at least second class honours, division A, or equivalent in their qualifying degree; andhave completed academic studies in political science, history, economics or some other discipline that may be considered an appropriate foundation for such study.Due to the length of time required for completion of PhD study and the difficulty in tracking progress, preference will be given to applicants seeking funding for Master?s level study.Preference may be given to applicants who have enrolled to study defence or strategic studies at a New Zealand university or who have enrolled in the Graduate Studies Programme in Strategy and Defence at the Australian National University.Candidates for the scholarships must undertake in writing that if awarded a scholarship they will, at the conclusion of their study under this scholarship, return to New Zealand to take up residence in New Zealand for not less than two years.
