About the scholarship
The purpose of this scholarship is to support Fire Engineering students at the University of Canterbury. Recipients are required to commit to an 18-month period of full-time employment, at market rates, with Fire and Emergency New Zealand. Value/Benefits:a. Financial assistance with the costs associated with university study, to a value of $20,000 b. May be offered 18 months full-time employment (at market rates) with Fire and Emergency New Zealand, after completion of the Master of Engineering in Fire Engineering (MEFE) or Master of Engineering Studies in Fire Engineering (MEngSt(Fire)) degree programme.Level of Study: Master's Closing Date: 11:59 pm (NZT) 30 November (Applications open approximately 8 weeks before this date) Tenure: One year for MEngSt (Fire) students. Two years for MEFE students Number Available Annually: Up to four Applicable Enrolment During Tenure: Must be enrolled full-time at the University of Canterbury in a programme for the Master of Engineering in Fire Engineering (MEFE) degree or a Master of Engineering Studies in Fire Engineering (MEngSt(Fire)) degree Citizenship/Residency Requirements: Must be a citizen of New Zealand, or hold a New Zealand residence class visa For more information please read the regulations, click here.By 10 December in the year of application:applicants must have met, or be able to demonstrate that they are likely to meet, the academic requirements for enrolment in a programme for an MEFE or MEngSt (Fire).applicants requiring admission with equivalent standing must have had this admission confirmed unconditionally (including any English language requirements).Fire and Emergency New Zealand established the scholarship in 2015 (under the name “New Zealand Fire Service Commission Fire Engineering Scholarship”), recognising a long-standing history of a relationship between the University of Canterbury and the Fire Service (later Fire and Emergency New Zealand), of which scholarships have been a part since 1994.The location of the employment - Christchurch, Wellington or Auckland - will be specified by Fire and Emergency New Zealand in the employment contract that will be offered at the time of degree completion.The University of Canterbury recommends that, before signing the agreement to accept an employment contract, the successful candidate obtains advice on:the terms of the agreement, including those relating to conditions of employment; and the potential impact of the future salary payments from Fire and Emergency New Zealand (as described in the agreement) on the taxation status of his or her scholarship payments.If, on a recipient's completion of the MEFE or MEngSt(Fire) programme, Fire and Emergency New Zealand has no suitable vacancies, an employment contract will not be offered and the recipient will be released from the employment obligation.This scholarship supports Fire Engineering students at the University of Canterbury.
