Friends and family of Emeritus Professor Cuthbert J. Wilkins (1917?2002) established the prize in 2006 in his memory. Professor Wilkins was an undergraduate student and member of the academic staff of the Department of Chemistry over a period that exceeded 70 years. He gained a PhD from Imperial College, London, in the 1940s. Aside from his university commitments, Cuth spent many years working with high school teachers, developing material for use in their classrooms, which included writing many high school Chemistry textbooks.
