About the course

Get prepared for the commercial dance sector. Develop your skills in jazz, ballet, tap, hip hop, commercial, lyrical, contemporary and ballroom dance. Train in our large studios and perform in our live productions. Learn to market yourself, develop a professional dance portfolio, make a showreel and develop industry-standard audition techniques for global companies.

The New Zealand Diploma in Dance equips students with a high level of technical, artistic and interpretative skill in dance and provides the opportunity for practical performing experience. Students also study dance history, anatomy, nutrition and gain the skills to become a successful self-employed artist.

Students perform in many productions which showcase the breadth of dance styles they have mastered during their studies.

All technique classes in this course are streamed into different levels best suited for the student’s growth and learning needs. Our highly trained and experienced tutors work one on one with students to ensure their goals are being met and help with their transition into work from graduating.

Students have the opportunity to collaborate with other students who are studying a variety of performing arts programmes, including musical theatre.

Completion of the New Zealand Diploma in Dance provides a pathway into the third year of the Bachelor of Creativity (Performing Arts). In this third year of study, students train further to master and perfect their dance abilities and also learn techniques in teaching, choreographing, directing, lighting design and real-life experience in the industry. Students use these skills to develop their own show at the end of their studies.

Performing Arts auditions

Auditions for our 2022 commercial dance intake will be held on the 4th & 5th of September 2021. They usually involve workshops or groups classes as well as some individual demonstration. Live auditions are preferred but can offer online audition information on request.

Entry criteria

NCEA Level 2 or equivalent, plus evidence of skills/ability/aptitude based on audition and interview

International Students

Proven equivalence to domestic entry requirements and IELTS 6.0 (no band lower than 5.5)
