Barista Espresso Masterclass

About the course

The course topics include the history, the science and the process of espresso. Training is in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere using a commercial espresso machine and quality products. Those who successfully complete this course will be awarded a Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology Record of Participation.

Content:

  • The coffee tree, from the bean to the roast
  • The different ways of producing coffee
  • Breaking down the principles: the grind, dosing, tamping, the Perfect extraction, over and under extraction, milk steaming
  • The espresso machine and how it works
  • Demonstration of different espresso-based drinks
  • Hands-on (machine time)
  • Care and maintenance of your equipment
  • Coffee quiz and lots of coffee drinking

Entry requirements

If you are over 16 years of age, please click on the Apply Now button to enrol.

If you are new to NMIT, please provide us with a verified copy(external link) of your ID upon application or enter your NSN (National Student Number).  If your NSN is unverified, we will request a verified copy(external link) of your ID.

If you are a full-time secondary school student, NMIT is able to enrol you if you meet all of the following:

  • are 16 years of age and over, and
  • attend this course outside of normal school hours, and
  • have obtained approval from your school principal (or approval from your home school supervisor if you are homeschooled).
