Get prepared for the workforce in a range of IT-related jobs with this programme that focuses on the theoretical and practical aspects of computers and their application in business and industry.

Gain a comprehensive understanding of IT and computing skills, including software development, technical support, and networking, to launch your professional career. 

This programme can be completed in three years of full-time study, or you can study part-time.

Programme Structure

In your first year you will take eight compulsory courses at Level 5. In years two and three you take specific courses to complete one of the two majors (Systems Development or ICT Infrastructure) and some elective courses to make up your total of 120 credits. 

First year courses: 

  • Communication for IT (COM 502)
  • Computer Systems Architecture (CSA 502)
  • Database Concepts (DAT 502)
  • Systems, Processes and Design (DES 502)
  • Networking Fundamentals (NET 502)
  • Introduction to Software Development (SDV 503)
  • Introduction to Systems Analysis and Design (SYD 502)
  • Introduction to Web Development (WEB 504)

Elective Courses come from the remaining courses which are not part of your majoring requirement. Note that not all elective courses are offered each year. 

Choose Your Major

Your major is a chance for you to specialise in a particular area of Information Technology. You don't have to decide until the beginning of your second year what you will major in.

Systems Development

Compulsory courses for the major are: 

  • Database Application Development (DAT 602)
  • Software Development (SDV 601)
  • Software Development 2 (SDV 602)
  • Dynamic Web Technology (WEB 601
  • Tiered Software Development (SDV 701)
  • Web Technologies (WEB 701)

ICT Infrastructure

Compulsory courses for this major are: 

  • Database Design and Administration (DAT 601)
  • Practical Network Development (NET 604)
  • Network Management (NET 602)
  • Systems Security (SEC 602)
  • Enterprise Infrastructure (NET 701)
  • Cloud Services (NET 702)
  • Capstone Project (PRJ 703)

Entry requirements

Academic Requirements

University Entrance: NCEA Level 3 (60 credits at Level 3 and 20 credits at Level 2 or higher) which must include:

  • 14 credits at Level 3 in each of three approved* subjects

as well as

  • Literacy* - 10 credits at Level 2 or above, made up of 5 credits in reading, 5 credits in writing

and

  • Numeracy* - 10 credits at Level 1 or above (specified achievement standards, or unit standards 26623, 26626, 26627)

OR

A qualification on the NZQF at Level 4 or above in a related discipline

OR

A qualification or examination recognised as being equivalent to achievement of NCEA Level 3 (e.g. International Baccalaureate, Cambridge Examination)

Alternative Requirements

Applicants who are unable to evidence that they meet Academic entry requirements, but who can demonstrate acquired skills for tertiary study gained through study, work and/or life experience, may be approved for alternative entry by the Curriculum Manager (or delegate)

English Language requirements

If English is not the applicant’s first language, applicants will need to provide a result from a test or qualification on the acceptable alternatives English Proficiency Outcomes Table:

  • IELTS 6.0 Academic (no lower than 5.5 in each band),

Note: Applicants who do not have evidence of English language skills and are a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident, may contact NMIT for an assessment

Applicants who have achieved NCEA Level 3 University Entrance requirements are not required to provide evidence of English language skills

IELTS scores used must be taken from a single IELTS Test Report Form and are valid for two years from the date of the test.

Software Partners

Use of software development tools is made available to Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology by the Academic Partner Program from Visual Paradigm for educational use.

Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) and SSD

You are required to have your own laptop with these minimum specifications.

Additionally, you'll need a SSD - 256GB Internal SSD of your own.
