About the course
Gain the skills and knowledge you need to apply for your Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW).
This Maritime Crewing programme caters for entry-level deck and engine room crew keen to work at sea on large seagoing vessels.
You have the option to complete the programme with one of two strands, either Deck Crewing, or, Engineering.
Each strand meets the competency standards required under STCW and as specified in the Maritime New Zealand Seafarer Certification and Operational Limits Framework(external link).
Completion of this qualification is a prerequisite to applying for a
- Maritime New Zealand STCW Deck Watch Rating licence, OR
- Maritime New Zealand STCW Engine Watch Rating licence.
Either of these licences will allow you to work with limited supervision as a crew on vessels operating in unlimited waters.
Academic requirements
There are no minimum academic requirements for entry to the Maritime Crewing Programmes.
English language requirements
All applicants must have a level of English sufficient to undertake this programme, which is taught and assessed in English. Those students whose first language is not English should have an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) overall academic score.
Level 3 Programmes: IELTS of at least 5 (with no band score lower than 5.0) issued within the last two years, or equivalent.
Level 4 Programmes: IELTS of at least 5.5 (with no band score lower than 5.0) issued within the last two years, or equivalent.

Other requirements
No prior MNZ licence required
Applicants should be aware that there are MNZ sea time, medical and eyesight requirements for the MNZ license which their programme contributes towards. Applicants should refer to www.maritimenz.govt.nz(external link) website.
In order to undertake the fire and survival training courses (SBT311 and SCC511) prior to the training taking place, applicants must:
- Be physically fit and capable of participating in the practical training component
- Provide a Medical Certificate issued by a General Practitioner, or provide a Seafarers Medical Certificate or equivalent.
Once you have completed this qualification and gained the relevant Maritime New Zealand licence, you will be eligible to enrol on the Maritime Crewing – STCW Able Seafarer Deck(external link) / STCW Able Seafarer Engine(external link) / STCW Electro-technical Rating programme.
Graduates of this programme will be able to demonstrate safe and sustainable working practices and contribute to effective communications and relationships on board a vessel.
Graduates of the Deck Crewing Strand will also be able to assist with vessel navigation at the support level.
Graduates of the Engineering Strand will also be a ble to assist with marine engineering at the support level.

This programme combines theory and practical skills and include a high proportion of practical, scenario based learning and assessment.
Your fellow learners on this programme will have experience or be currently working on vessels in trainee and/or support roles ans will have work experience and knowledge gained on-board in a variety of conditions and locations. Some students will be operating from international locations. Our programme encourages you to share your individual experiences related to course content, maximising the learning opportunities of the entire class.
The delivery of this programme embodies the concept of AKO in tertiary education in New Zealand.
