Congratulations! You are ready to take the next step in filling your basket of knowledge after building your basic understanding of te reo Māori.
This semester, you will further develop and consolidate your te reo through a combination of in-classroom and local marae-based culturally immersive experiences, which will help you to build your skills to communicate in familiar everyday contexts and on the marae.
Kura-pō ākonga (part-time night students) will also have four noho wānanga throughout the year. These are two immersive days of shared kai and interactive experiences designed so you can practice what you are learning in a real-life environment.
You'll learn and practice your pepeha, be able to talk about your day, and feel more comfortable communicating with your whanau and on the marae. The confidence you build through your classes and interactions will allow you to embed te reo Māori further and display tikanga in your workplace and everyday life.

Nelson delivery options
Kura pō | Part-time night classes
Evening classes run from 5 - 9 pm, and include a shared kai. After enrolling, you will be placed in class on a Wednesday or Thursday. Should you have a preferred evening to attend class, please email [email protected] and let our friendly team know your choice.
Te Reo Ohooho | Thursday evenings
Te Reo Ohooho classes are available for anyone who has Māori whakapapa. It is optional but highly recommended as a safe and positive way to connect, revitalise and grow your reo.
If you included your iwi affiliations or identify as Māori in the enrolment process, we will put you in the Te Reo Ohooho class. Please email [email protected] if you do not wish to be in this class or have any pātai.
Kura rā | Full-time day classes
Daytime classes run from 9 am - 3 pm, Tuesday to Friday. One of the advantages of studying full-time is that you can progress your learning with Level 2 in Semester Two (July), then apply and go on to study Level 3 from February the next year.

Once you have mastered Level 2, you can move onto Level 3.

The development of basic understanding and awareness of te reo Māori can be utilised to support and complement existing skills and knowledge in your current or future area of employment.
Extending your te reo skills can lead to employment opportunities in both the public and private sectors. These opportunities could include support roles in marketing, business management, health, sustainability, Iwi development, communications, broadcasting, teaching, strategic advising, Māori research, tourism, and administration.
Entry requirements
Academic requirements
NCEA Level 1 or
Be able to demonstrate equivalent knowledge and skills.
If you are aged 20 years or above and do not meet the academic entry requirements, but your skills, education or work experience indicate you will have a chance of success, you may be eligible for special admission by the Curriculum Manager or designated staff member.
English Language requirements
A level of English sufficient to be able to study at this level.
If English is not your first language you should have an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) General or Academic score of 5 with no band score lower than 5 or other approved English language tests may be used to demonstrate that the English standard is met.
