About the course
This certificate prepares you for studies at level 6 for a certificate or diploma or, level 7 for a diploma, degree, or graduate certificate.
On successful completion of this level you will be able to:
- Write a text under test conditions in English for an academic purpose
- Deliver an oral presentation in English for an academic purpose
- Demonstrate understanding of a spoken text and process information in English for an academic purpose
- Write a crafted text for a specified audience using researched material in English for an academic purpose
- Read and process information in English for an academic purpose

| Completion of this programme can help you gain entry into other NMIT programmes that require an IELTS score of 6 with no band score lower than 5.5. At NMIT we test your English language skills when you arrive, so we can get you started at the best level for your learning. |
IELTS overall 5.5 or equivalent or having successfully completed NZCEL Level 3 (Applied)
A course book may be required and costs $50 to $60. You will also require an English dictionary.
English language terms are eight weeks long (plus a two week break during or before/after term).
It takes two terms to complete a qualification.
