About the course
Gain the skills for a beauty therapy career. Learn makeup, facials, eye treatments, waxing, nails, and spray tanning.
Interested in the latest beauty treatments and want people to feel confident by helping them look and feel great? If so, a career in the beauty therapy industry may be perfect for you.
Suppose you like science or studying the way the body works. In that case, you'll be fascinated to develop your understanding of human anatomy and physiology, the essential foundation for both massage and beauty therapy.
You'll also learn the latest facial treatments, makeup and massage techniques, waxing services, tanning and nails. As your knowledge and skills grow, you'll be able to offer these services at our professional on-campus beauty salon, Beauty Zone.

Hands-on Learning
Not only will you get hands-on experience working in our commercial training salon, Beauty Zone, but you will also have opportunities to visit off-campus salons and be involved in community events to get a feel for what it's like to work in the beauty industry.
You'll also have the opportunity to show off your creative skills at our hairdressing and beauty therapy competitions.

Beauty Zone, your on-campus training salon
Throughout the term, once a week, you will be able to practise your skills in a real-life setting in the on-campus training salon, Beauty Zone. As your skills grow, so will the services you can offer customers.
Entry requirements
Academic requirements
80 credits NCEA Level 1 or above, including 10 literacy credits and 10 numeracy credits at Level 1 or above.
Alternative requirements
Applicants (including those over 20 years of age) who are unable to evidence that they meet Academic Entry Requirements, but who can demonstrate acquired skills for tertiary study gained through study, work and/or life experience, may be approved for alternative entry by the Curriculum Manager or delegate.
English language requirements

Applicants who do not have evidence of English language skills and are a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident, may contact NMIT for an assessment.
- IELTS 5.0 Academic (no lower than 5.0 in any subtest)
IELTS scores used must be taken from a single IELTS Test Report Form and are valid for two years from the date of the test.
Note: Applicants who have achieved NCEA Level 3 University Entrance requirements are not required to provide evidence of English language skills.
Further information
Applicants must be at least 17 years of age at the time the programme commences.
Applicants who meet academic entry criteria may be required to attend an interview with the Programme Coordinator and tutor to inform the applicant about the programmes and assess suitability of the programmes for the applicant.
The Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology computer network is a central facility for all students. Rules governing student use of the computer network are provided.
Students must provide their own:
- Flat, covered, black shoes
- Padlock
- Full-length black trousers
- Linen kit, including 6 x spa towels and 2 x hand towels
Students must purchase a kit bag from NMIT. Enrolled students will be notified of the contents and cost of the kit bag prior to the start of the course date.
