About the course
If you don't meet the entry requirements for a degree, like Nursing, Art and Design, Counselling or Social Work, or a diploma - this is the programme for you.
No matter what your age, if you are looking to get into study, this programme offers different pathways to best prepare you and give you the confidence to succeed on your chosen degree or diploma.
There are three pathways to choose depending on what you want to do:
- The Hauora Pathway for Health will prepare you for applying for theBachelor of Nursing(external link)or other degree or diploma related to Health.
- Te Hāpai Hāpori Pathway for Counselling and Social Work will prepare you for thePaetahi Tumu Kōrero Bachelor of Counselling(external link)(external link),the Bachelor of Social Work(external link)or a degree or diploma related to Counselling, Social Work or working with communities.
- The Ngā Toi Pathway will prepare you for theNew Zealand Diploma in Arts and Media(external link),Bachelor of Arts and Media(external link),New Zealand Diploma in Interior Design(external link)orBachelor of Computer Generated Imagery(external link).
The 60 credits to complete the programme includes two 15 credit courses that are core to all pathways and are compulsory.
The compulsory courses are marked with a C below (Skills for Successful Tertiary Study and Building Communication Competence).
You can then select two more 15 credit courses to make up the required 60 credits from the following pathway options:
- The Hauora Pathway for Health, you can choose the courses called: Introduction to Health Studies and The Biophysical Basis of Health.
- Te Hāpai Hāpori Pathway for Counselling and Social Work, you can choose the courses called: Introduction to the Counselling Profession and Introduction to the Social Work Profession.
- The Ngā Toi Pathway for Arts and Design (Level 4) programme provides students with the basic knowledge and skills to pursue further study in the creative industries.
Course selection does not occur until after your application is with us and we will then talk to you about the courses you want to choose.
Course materials
| Academic requirements | A minimum of 40 credits NCEA Level 2 across four subjects including; - Literacy – 10 credits at Level 2 or above - Numeracy – 10 credits at Level 1 or above Or
If you have undertaken a qualification or examination other than NCEA (e.g. International Baccalaureate, Cambridge Examination), NMIT will assess this for academic entry equivalency. |
| Alternative Entry | Applicants who are unable to evidence that they meet Academic Entry Requirements, but who can demonstrate acquired skills for tertiary study gained through study, work and/or life experience, may be approved for alternative entry. This may include Recognition of Prior Learning. Contact NMIT for advice. |
| English language requirements | If English is not the applicant’s first language they will need to provide a result from a test or qualification on the acceptable alternatives English Proficiency Outcomes Chart.(external link) Applicants who do not have evidence of English language skills and are a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident, may contact NMIT for an assessment. • IELTS 5.5 Academic (no lower than 5.0 in any subtest) |
