About the course

This Level 4 programme will suit you if you already have experience in hairstyling, colouring and basic cutting techniques, and you wish to advance your skills and knowledge to become a professional hairstylist. It’s designed to follow on from the New Zealand Certificate in Hairdressing (Salon Support) Level 3, building on the skills and knowledge you've already acquired. The programme is delivered through a mix of tutorials, group projects and visits (offsite and online), led by our expert tutors and using their extensive industry connections. You'll learn about advanced hair and scalp analysis, various types of advanced cutting, chemical and non-chemical services and how to design, develop and create long hair creative styles for special themes or events. Along the way you’ll create a portfolio of work to showcase your skills. The aim of the programme is to equip you with the professional standards required of an emerging stylist. This includes the knowledge and practical abilities to independently carry out salon and client services, ensuring the smooth operation of a commercial salon. Upon graduation, you’ll be acknowledged by the industry as a professional hairstylist, capable of delivering comprehensive fashion services and operating with broad guidance. Please note: To meet health and safety requirements, you must be physically able to undertake the practical components of the programme in an industry emulated environment.

Overall IELTS 5.5 Academic or General 5.0 Listening 5.0 Reading 5.0 Writing 5.0 Speaking If English is not your first language, we want to make sure that you will be successful in your chosen programme of study. Please provide a result from a test or qualification on the acceptable alternatives English Proficiency Outcomes Chart. If you are a New Zealand Citizen or Permanent Resident, complete an Admission and Enrolment form and Ara will contact you regarding a free assessment. IELTS scores used must be taken from a single IELTS Test Report Form and are valid for two years from the date of the test. What if I have achieved NCEA Level 3 University Entrance? You do not need to provide additional evidence of English Language skills. New Zealand Certificate in Hairdressing (Level 3) or an equivalent qualification.
