About the course

Progress your career in adult and tertiary teaching with the New Zealand Certificate in Adult and Tertiary Teaching (Level 5).

This well-regarded qualification is great for individuals aspiring to, or in, a career in adult and tertiary teaching or training, including vocational education and training.

It is intended for those who already have a qualification or equivalent experience in their primary discipline e.g. a trade, and represents the base level qualification for a professional adult and tertiary teaching practitioner.

You will learn to:

  • Design for learning to meet specified learning outcomes in a familiar context
  • Use learner-centred teaching strategies that respect learners’ mana and diverse backgrounds
  • Select and apply facilitation, teaching and learning strategies in familiar contexts, using resources and technologies to meet specific outcomes
  • Use assessment and moderation processes
  • Seek and respond to feedback from learners and other stakeholders to improve learner outcomes in candidate's own context

To gain this qualification you will need to complete a minimum of 40 credits from the following units:

Compulsory units

7110 Critically evaluate and improve own professional knowledge and practice in adult education and training (8 credits)
Requires students to be in a classroom or teaching environment
People credited with this unit standard are able to critically evaluate own professional knowledge and practice, and plan and use strategies to improve it.

7097 Facilitate learner-led interactive learning sessions for adult learners (12 Credits)

Requires students to be in a classroom or teaching environment

People credited with this unit standard are able to prepare to facilitate, facilitate, and review learner-led interactive learning sessions for adult learners.

7093 Plan for delivery of learning sessions for adults (10 credits)
People credited with this unit standard are able to identify learning outcomes and select content in order to plan learning sessions for delivery to adults.

7100 Plan, organise, and review learning events for adult education and training (10 credits)
Requires students to be in a classroom or teaching environment
People credited with this unit standard are able to plan, organise, and review learning events. This unit standard is relevant to staff within organisations providing adult education and training. It applies both to organisations for which the provision of adult education and training is the core business activity and to organisations where education and training support the core business activity.

11551 Quality assure assessment (10 credits)

People credited with this unit standard are able to quality assure assessment materials and assessor decisions.

7091 Establish a culturally safe and inclusive learning environment for adults in New Zealand's cultural setting (4 credits)
People credited with this unit standard are able to identify diverse cultural needs in a New Zealand learning environment, and establish a culturally safe and inclusive learning environment for adults. This unit standard is for people wishing to teach or train adults in New Zealand.

Requires students to be in a classroom or teaching environment
People credited with this unit standard are able to: demonstrate knowledge of learning session evaluation aims and methods; prepare for the evaluation of adult learning sessions; implement and analyse learning session evaluations; and review the evaluation process.

11552 Design and evaluate assessment materials (10 credits)
Requires pre-moderation and stakeholder feedback
People credited with this unit standard are able to design and evaluate assessment materials.
