About the course
Learn how to pamper people, enhance their beauty and give them a relaxing experience. The New Zealand Certificate in Beauty Therapy (Level 4) will teach you how to deliver a range of beauty services for nails, skin and makeup. You will also learn business aspects of beauty therapy, customer service and sales.
You will learn:
- natural nail services, products, and tools
- beauty treatment plans
- facial and skin care services
- manual hair removal
- body care services
- chemistry, physics and biology
- nutrition
- skin-related disease and disorders
- health, safety and hygiene obligations
- small business and customer service
ITEC international examinations can be undertaken as part of this course at an additional cost.
This qualification is designed to provide the beauty sector with therapists who have the skills and knowledge to analyse, plan and provide a broad range of beauty services. This course is intended for learners who have little or no prior learning or experience in beauty services.

CBT100 Anatomy and Physiology
Students awarded this qualification are able to identify systems of the human body, organs and general functions as relevant to beauty services.
CBT110 Consultation
Students awarded this qualification are able to:
- Demonstrate knowledge of the consultation process, identify the client’s wants and needs to develop a treatment plan
- Demonstrate knowledge of a treatment plan and product needs
- In relation to the beauty services industry, maintain a professional working relationship with clients, other therapists, other students, and other medical professionals
CBT120 Dermatology
Students awarded this qualification are able to:
- Identify symptoms of skin and skin related diseases and disorders
- Identify the possible implications in terms of beauty treatments
CBT130 Health, Safety and Hygiene
Students awarded this qualification are able to:
- Demonstrate knowledge of personal care, hygiene and safety in a salon
- Maintain safe and professional practice within the beauty workplace
- Provide first aid and provide basic life support
CBT140 Manicure and Pedicure
Students awarded this qualification are able to:
- Prepare to perform a manicure service and perform a complete manicure service
- Prepare to perform a pedicure service and perform a complete pedicure service
- Prepare for a complimentary nail service and perform a complimentary nail service
CBT150 Nutrition
Students awarded this qualification are able to demonstrate knowledge of nutrition in relation to beauty therapy services; and nutritional advice in relation to supporting skin care services.
CBT160 Reception
Students awarded this qualification are able to:
- Demonstrate knowledge of the receptionist role and functions for the beauty industry
- Demonstrate communication skills for customer service and client sales in the beauty industry; and maintain a beauty industry reception area
CBT170 Small Business
Students awarded this qualification are able to, in relation to the beauty services industry; explain types of business, Acts and Regulations effecting businesses, the operation of a small business and customer practice.
CBT180 Facial Care Services
Students awarded this qualification are able to:
- Demonstrate knowledge of skin types and skin conditions relevant to product and service selection for facial therapy services.
- Prepare for selected facial therapy services
- Perform a cleansing and toning service, an exfoliation service, a facial massage sequence, a mask application, and moisturizing services and complete follow up actions
- Demonstrate knowledge of products and techniques used for eye enhancement services; prepare to perform and perform eye enhancement services; and complete follow up actions
- Conduct a client consultation to determine make-up selection; and perform make-up services
CBT190 Body Care Services
Students awarded this qualification are able to:
- Demonstrate knowledge of hair growth patterns, stages of growth and hair types relevant for depilatory services; perform depilatory wax services; and complete follow up actions
- Demonstrate knowledge of self-tanning techniques, perform a full body self-tanning treatment and complete follow up actions
- Demonstrate knowledge of foundation relaxation massage practice; describe the effects of, and contraindications to, foundation relaxation massage; perform a foundation relaxation massage of the back, neck and shoulders; and complete follow up actions
