About the course
RYA powerboat courses are primarily for those using small powered craft such as RIBs, dories and sportsboats that don't generally undertake long or offshore passages.
We offer the only RYA powerboat training in the South Island.
In two days or less, you will learn all you need to know to build your powerboat skills and basic competence.
The skills you'll learn will start with identifying maritime conditions and progress to the powerboat's driving, mooring and anchoring.
You will also learn how to judge your capabilities and those of the craft.
The types of commercial craft requiring this level of certification include superyachts, charter fishing boats, small passenger launches, thrill-ride operators, harbour patrol launches, construction site safety boats and more.
If you will be using larger boats with accommodation and the capacity to cruise or work further offshore, you will need a certificate as a Day Skipper(external link), or Skipper Restricted Limits(external link).
No pre-course experience or knowledge is necessary.
You need to be 15 in New Zealand for the Level 2 Powerboat Handling course but a commercial endorsement cannot be obtained until the age of 17.
