About the course
We offer a suite of refresher courses for holders of STCW Certificates of Competency. Whether you are a Master, Mate, Deck Officer, Marine Engineer Officer or Able Seafarer, we can provide refresher training to meet your needs.
Our STCW refresher courses are bundled together for your convenience. So if you need STCW PISC and STCW Advanced Fire refreshers, you will find that they are conveniently timetabled one after the other.
If you also need a STCW Fast Rescue Boat refresher, we offer a limited number of these, which are also timetabled together with the PISC/Fire refresher dates.
Course Aim
The course is designed for students who have already completed the full STCW Advanced Fire Fighting course. This refresher course is designed to meet the STCW refresher training requirements for:
- STCW Advanced Fire Fighting
- in accordance with the provisions of Section A-VI/3 of the International convention on Standards of Training Certification and Watch-keeping for Seafarers (STCW) 1978, as amended, and
- STCW Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting
In accordance with the provisions of Section A-VI/1-2 of the International convention on Standards of Training Certification and Watch-keeping for Seafarers (STCW) 1978, as amended.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Use various types of portable extinguishers
- Extinguish small fires such as electrical oil or propane fires
- Extinguish extensive fires with water using jet and spray nozzles
- Fight fire in smoke filled enclosed spaces wearing self-contained breathing apparatus
- Extinguish oil fires with fog applicator and spray nozzles, dry chemical or foam applicators using jet and spray nozzles
- Understand how high expansion foam is used to extinguish fires on board a vessel
- Extinguish fires with water fog or any other suitable fire-fighting agent in a simulated accommodation room or engine room fire and heavy smoke
- Extinguish oil fire with fog applicator and spray nozzles, dry chemical powder or foam applicators
- Evaluate the use of water for fire extinguishing including the effect on ship stability, precautions to be taken and corrective procedures
- Evaluate fire-fighting involving dangerous goods

The certificates you will receive on completion of this course are:
- Fire Prevention & Fire Fighting Refresher
- Advanced Fire Fighting Refresher

- Have a current medical examination certificate issued by an approved General Practitioner such as Seafarers Medical or equivalent
- Provide evidence of an STCW Advanced Fire Fighting certificate
- A record of on-board training, drills and experience, or a company letter, or equivalent documentation demonstrating that the standard of competence required by the STCW code Section A-VI/3 and Section A-VI/1-2 has been maintained in the preceding five years.
