Bar Managers Course

About the course

If you would like to develop knowledge and skills to hold a Manager's Certificate, then the Bar Manager's course is ideal for you.

When you successfully complete the Bar Manager's course, you will receive the relevant NZQA unit standards to be able to apply for your Bar Manager's Certificate. Please note you must be 20 years of age or over to hold a Bar Manager's Certificate.

Course options of the new licensing laws:

  • Host responsibilities - the server and in practice
  • Legal requirements
  • Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act 2012

Those who successfully complete this course will be awarded:

  • NMIT Record and Letter of Achievement
  • NZQA Unit Standard 16705 - Demonstrate knowledge of host responsibility requirements as a duty manager of licensed premises
  • NZQA Unit Standard 4646 v8 Demonstrate knowledge of the Sale of Liquor Act 2012 and its implications for licensed premises.

Course workbook:

When you are enrolled, and payment has been received, you will receive a bar manager’s course workbook. Please allow a few days to read through the workbook prior to the start of your course.

You must be 18 years of age or over.

Entry requirements

You must be 18 years of age or older to enrol on this short course.

Please enrol five working days (or as soon as you can to ensure your place on these courses) before the date the course starts to ensure the course has enough people on it to run. We are unable to run courses without sufficient numbers. If this situation occurs, you will be advised at least three working days before the course is due to start.

The Student Levy is included in the fee.

Are international student insurance costs included?

The New Zealand Ministry of Education, through the Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students, requires that all International Students must have appropriate medical and travel insurance for the duration of their planned study in New Zealand. For more information please visit www.minedu.cwp.govt.nz(external link). NMIT will automatically arrange insurance coverage for all students. NMIT has arrangements with Marsh Ltd (in association with Vero) a New Zealand based provider who has specific policies for International Students. This policy is called Studentsafe. 

The cost of insurance is included in the course fee. Students can choose their own insurance company, however, it must comply with the minimum standards required by the Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students. If you arrange your own insurance cover, you must supply your Certificate of Insurance and Schedule of Cover, in English, to the Information and Enrolment Centre. Once the insurance policy is evaluated and confirmed as meeting the minimum standards required by the Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students the policy is taken out by NMIT on your behalf will be cancelled and the fees refunded to you.
