About the course
Youth Guarantee programmes are FREE* and a great way to learn practical skills and gain a qualification. You can apply for these options if you're 16 to 24 years of age and no longer at school, or you're planning on leaving school. This programme has been designed to provide a broad introduction to hairdressing, and a foundation to build upon with further study. You'll learn about salon culture, hierarchy and terminology so you can communicate appropriately with clients, peers and supervisors. You'll also learn elementary styling skills such as blow drying, moulding, setting and long hair-ups, plus colour treatment basics. Health and safety, hygiene and personal health and presentation within a salon environment are also covered. *Funding availability dependent. Please note: places are limited on this course and funding may be exhausted throughout the year. We’re experiencing high volumes of demand for foundation education, and we’ll do our best to support and transition learners where possible.

Overall IELTS 5.0 Academic 5.0 Listening 5.0 Reading 5.0 Writing 5.0 Speaking If English is not your first language, we want to make sure that you will be successful in your chosen programme of study. Please provide a result from a test or qualification on the acceptable alternatives English Proficiency Outcomes Chart. If you are a New Zealand Citizen or Permanent Resident, complete an Admission and Enrolment form and Ara will contact you regarding a free assessment. If you are not a New Zealand Citizen or Permanent resident, book an IELTS or other test through the Ara Examination Centre or in your home country. IELTS scores used must be taken from a single IELTS Test Report Form and are valid for two years from the date of the test. What if I have achieved NCEA Level 3 University Entrance? You do not need to provide additional evidence of English Language skills. If you're a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident and between 16 to 24 years old, you can apply to study if you have left school or are intending to leave school & you have not achieved the equivalent level NCEA qualification at school
