Preparation for Independent Living A Training Scheme
NZQF Level 1

About the course

This programme will offer a safe, happy, vibrant and nurturing learning environment.

The programme is inclusive and based on the philosophy that anyone has a right to learn and to reach their potential by progressing their knowledge, skills and abilities.

On this course you will learn the basic skills to help you live better in a flat, either on your own or with others.

Work with others to plan housework to keep your flat clean and tidy.

Learn about the importance of a healthy diet.

Learn about healthy exercise and personal hygiene.

Be able to be safe and confident crossing roads and using footpaths.

Entry requirements

This programme has no academic entry requirements.

Additional requirements

  • Applicants are required to attend an interview
  • Evidence of good character and personal attributes via 1 referee report
  • Evidence of a learning disability (Intellectual Disability), this may be from a psychological assessment or referral from a medical practitioner, Needs Assessment Service or educational provider
  • Applicants must be aged 18 years or over as at 1 February of the year of enrolment
  • Entry to the optional Skills for Working strand is only by approval of the programme leader.

English requirements

All applicants are required to demonstrate a level of communication in English or NZ Sign Language that allows them to participate in the programme.

Structure and timetable

This course will run for one day a week for the whole semester. There is a break for the school holidays.
