About the course
Course Aim
This course is designed to provide basic tanker training for maritime officers and ratings. It comprises of a basic training programme appropriate to their duties as detailed in the learning outcomes. The course takes full account of Section A-V/1-1 of the STCW Code (Standards of Training and Certification of Watchkeeping 1978 as amended, including the 2010 amendments. Upon completion of this course, and subject to the co-requisite requirement, students will be issued with an NMIT Record of Achievement in Basic Safety Training for Oil and Chemical Cargo Operations.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- contribute to the safe cargo operation of oil and chemical tankers
- take precautions to prevent hazards associated with tanker operations
- apply occupational health and safety precautions and measures associated with tanker operations
- understand fire response principles for oil and chemical tankers, and action to be taken
- respond to emergencies associated with tanker operations
- take precautions to prevent pollution of the environment from the release of oil or chemicals
These outcomes will enable the student to safely perform the duties of a Watch-keeper on tankers as per the requirements of Section A-V/1-1, Table 1-1-1 of the International convention on Standards of Training Certification and Watch-keeping for Seafarers (STCW) 1978, as amended.

Pre-requisites:
Students must hold as a minimum:
- an STCW Basic fire-fighting certificate issued in accordance with STCW Chapter VI, Table VI/1-2 or
- a New Zealand issued STCW Certificate of Competency
Co-requisites:
An STCW Advanced fire-fighting certificate issued in accordance with STCW must also be completed before the NMIT Record of Achievement in Basic Safety Training for Oil and Chemical Cargo Operations can be issued.
