Fishing Vessel Crewing – Advanced Deckhand Fishing

About the course

This programme contributes to graduates obtaining their Maritime New Zealand licence: Advanced Deckhand – Fishing.

If you want to enter the maritime industry or have been part of a fishing crew and want to upskill then this qualification is for you.

Through this qualification, you will gain the skills and knowledge you need to work under general supervision in coastal, offshore and unlimited operational limits as specified in the Maritime New Zealand Seafarer Certification and Operational Limits Framework.

Greater independence on the deck

Upon successful completion of this qualification you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate safe and sustainable working practices
  • Contribute to effective communications and relationships on board
  • Understand the factors that affect the safety of the fishing vessel and crew, such as nautical terminology and commands
  • Assist with vessel navigation at the support level
  • Understand fishing vessel construction and factors affecting stability and seaworthiness
  • Apply seamanship knowledge and skills to the safe operation of the vessel at the support level

Completion of this programme is a prerequisite to applying for a Maritime New Zealand Advanced Deckhand – Fishing (ADH-F) licence. 

Graduates will also be able to apply to be licensed under the International Convention of Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Fishing Vessel Personnel (STCW-F).

The ADH-F certificate corresponds with a certificate issued under Resolution 4 of the International Convention on the Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Fishing Vessel Personnel (STCW-F).

Academic requirements

  • Employed or seeking employment on an aquaculture or commercial fishing vessel

English language requirements

International applicants for whom English is not their first language will be required to show evidence of language competency, issued within the last two years, before being eligible to enrol in any non-English programme.

The level of competency required is outlined in the NZQA English Language requirements(external link) and below:

  • Level 3 certificate IELTS General or Academic score of 5 with no band score lower than 5 or completed NZ Certificate in English Language L3. For domestic applicants for whom English is not their first language evidence of language competency may be required.
