Ministry of Justice checks

Upon application to the programme students are required to sign a consent form to allow NMIT to apply for a Ministry of Justice Criminal Conviction Check. Due to the nature of the nursing profession it is considered necessary to establish students’ records of criminal convictions, if any. Possession of a criminal record is not automatic grounds for declining enrolment. Consideration is given to currency, nature, severity of conviction(s) and associated factors.
The Programme Coordinator, in consultation with the Curriculum Manager - Health and Fitness may decline an application for enrolment, or a student’s right to progress on the grounds of criminal conviction(s).

All records obtained will be kept as private and confidential. Where a student has a history of criminal conviction(s) or incurs a conviction while enrolled (see below), this record will be made available to practice placement agencies, with student consultation, to ensure informed agency agreement to student placement.

Once enrolled, students are required to inform the Curriculum Manager - Health and Fitness of any criminal charges that may be laid during the year.

NMIT COVID-19 vaccination policy

The New Zealand Government no longer requires any health practitioner to be vaccinated before they can practise. However, individual employers and organisations are still permitted to maintain their own vaccination requirements.

Although mask-wearing is in general no longer compulsory, the Government does still require masks to be worn in many healthcare and disability support settings. Individual employers may also choose to require mask-wearing on their premises.
