Value | The number of scholarships awarded annually is at the discretion of the Board. |
Length | Tenurea) The tenure of the scholarship is for one academic year. b) The tenure is for the year following the successful application for the scholarship. c) The scholarship cannot be awarded to a successful scholar more than once. d) The scholarship is tenable with any other scholarship award. e) The scholarship will be paid to the successful applicant on receipt by Holstein Friesian New Zealand of his or her course acceptance. f) The scholar is required to provide his or her results to the General Manager of Holstein Friesian New Zealand at the end of each semester in the year the scholarship is awarded. g) The scholar must maintain an adequate academic record and not bring the scholarship or Holstein Friesian New Zealand into disrepute. h) If the General Manager, at any time, is satisfied that the scholar is not diligently pursuing his or her studies; or is not complying with the conditions of the scholarship; or is not making satisfactory progress, then the General Manager may suspend or terminate any scholarship. i) The expectation will be that the scholarship will be paid back in part or in full if the scholarship is suspended or terminated. j) The tertiary institution where study will be undertaken is the choice of the scholar. |

About the scholarship
Holstein Friesian New Zealand offers an annual scholarship(s) to Young Breeder members (16-35 years) to help with the expenses of tertiary education. The study the successful scholar undertakes must be able to be related back to Holstein Friesian New Zealand and/or the dairy industry.
To be eligible to receive the scholarship, applicants shall:
- Be a member of Holstein Friesian New Zealand
- Be between 16 and 35 years of age as at 1 January in the year of study
- Be a New Zealand Citizen
- Be attending or applying to attend an accredited tertiary institution within New Zealand
- Not already been awarded the Holstein Friesian New Zealand Scholarship previously
- The scholarship is open to any applicant at any stage of their study as long as he or she meets the above eligibility criteria.
How To Apply
Application Process
- Applicants are required to complete the cover sheet (HFNZS1) and include a passport size photo for promotional purposes if successful.
- Applicants are required to submit a letter of application addressing the following questions: a) What is your intended or current course of study and why are you undertaking to study this? What are your career intentions on the completion of the course? b) How does your current/intended course of study relate back to Holstein Friesian New Zealand or the dairy industry in New Zealand? c) What has been your involvement in Holstein Friesian New Zealand activities up to now? How long have you been a member?
- Applicants are required to provide a two-page curriculum vitae summarising their education and work experience. Also include any of the following: a) NCEA Record of Achievement b) School Certificate results c) Sixth Form Certificate Results d) University Entrance/Bursaries results e) Trade qualifications f) Tertiary qualifications g) Results to date of partially-completed tertiary qualification
- Applicants are required to submit at least one confidential letter of reference from a member of Holstein Friesian New Zealand (NOT a family member) with the application. Please note that Holstein Friesian New Zealand may contact the referee/s for further information if needed.
- It is the applicant’s responsibility to advise his or her referee(s) that they may be contacted by the General Manager or a member of the Holstein Friesian New Zealand Board as part of the application process.
- All official documents requested as part of your scholarship application must be supplied as verified copies (certified by a Justice of the Peace, solicitor or staff member of Holstein Friesian New Zealand) – please do not send any original documents. Holstein Friesian New Zealand accepts no responsibility to return original documents.
- Applications must arrive in the office no later than 7 November 2025. No undertaking is given to accept late applications.
- All applicants must sign the Disclosure of Information statement (NZHFS2)
- All applications received must not be placed into any sort of folder. Simply attach all pages, including the application letter, curriculum vitae and referee letter(s) to the cover sheet (HFNZS1) and Disclosure of Information (HFNZ2) with ONE staple in the top left hand corner. All pages must be A4 size.
- Electronic application will be accepted and must be supplied as a PDF file.

What you receive
Holstein Friesian New Zealand wishes to support its Young Breeders in a field of study which is likely to be of direct benefit to Holstein Friesian New Zealand or the dairy industry. The monies from the scholarship must be used for fees or books/resources at the tertiary institution of the applicant’s choice. The scholarship will be paid to the successful scholar on receipt of the confirmation of intended study from the tertiary institution.
The Holstein Friesian New Zealand Scholarship Fund was established in 2012 to raise funds for an annual scholarship.
Entry requirements

Selection
Holstein Friesian New Zealand will be selecting a scholar(s) on the following criteria:
a) Demonstrated enthusiasm for the Holstein Friesian breed
b) Demonstrated participation and leadership in Holstein Friesian New Zealand activities
c) Evidence the intended course of study will relate back to Holstein Friesian New Zealand or the dairy industry
d) Character and diligence
e) Academic merit
