About the scholarship

Aotearoa's central Taupō Volcanic Zone (Ahi Tupua) is home to two large active caldera volcanoes, Taupō and Ōkataina, which pose significant hazard to large areas of the North Island. This scholarship is an opportunity to be involved in the install of a large temporary network of seismic instruments at Ōkataina in partnership with local Iwi, with the aim of imaging the sub-surface of the volcano to understand the volcano's present state and structure. Supervised by Drs. El Mestel and Finn Illsley-Kemp, you will assist with preparing, deploying and recovering seismic instruments, and with the management and archiving of the collected data. The project will involve outdoor work in remote areas and a reasonable level of physical fitness is required. You must be prepared to spend a large portion of the summer away from Wellington (accommodation provided).
