About the scholarship
This research grant has been established in memory of Rosemary Barrington by her family. Rosemary Barrington's association with Victoria University of Wellington spanned nearly five decades, beginning in 1965 when she worked in the University library. She went on to complete her BA (Hons) here and later tutored in the Sociology Department and was a research fellow at the Institute of Criminology. As a student, she was International Affairs Officer and later Women's Vice-President of the Victoria University of Wellington Students' Association and was instrumental in forming the first creche at the University. During her life, Rosemary was an active campaigner for equality for women and human rights. Rosemary joined the University Council in 1999 and had been a member since then. For three years of that period, in the early 2000s, she served as Chancellor of Victoria University of Wellington. Throughout her life, Rosemary brought tireless dedication, energy, and great warmth to the many roles she served. This research grant has been set up to advance the cause of social justice in New Zealand and to allow funding for research that may otherwise not be possible.
