About the scholarship

To encourage Māori postgraduate research in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington offers scholarships to those Māori students about to begin their Master by Research studies. These scholarships are awarded on academic merit and are open to New Zealand Māori students. The scholarship comprises a $22,000 tax free stipend, plus tuition fees for one year (domestic fees for the thesis component only). Fees will be paid directly to the University by the Scholarships Office.

Entry requirements

Applicants must be intending to enrol full time at Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington. Applicants must be intending to enrol for a Master's degree by thesis (e.g. AIML 591 or DATA 591). Applicants must be of Māori descent. Applicants would normally be expected to have completed a BSc (Hons), MSc Part 1 or a PGDipSc in AIML, COMP, DATA, SWEN or STAT, demonstrating good academic achievement from VUW or another New Zealand University. Awards will be based on academic merit and quality of the research proposal. A completed online application must be submitted by 4:30 pm on the closing date. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted. Any required supporting documentation (including references) must also be received by 4:30 pm on the closing date in order for the application to be considered.
