About the scholarship
In 1995, Massey University received a generous endowment from the Sasakawa Foundation of Tokyo, now the Nippon Foundation, to fund a programme for the enhancement of Japanese Language Education and Japanese Studies in New Zealand.
This programme is called the Sasakawa Fellowship Fund for Japanese Language Education. Due to the drop in interest on the term deposit, we have, in consultation with the Tokyo Foundation for Policy Research and the Steering Committees, made the decision not to offer any new scholarships in 2021.
The Fund offers scholarships to students who are enrolling full-time for a first under-graduate degree in Japanese language, or Japanese language conjoint with a second degree.
The purpose of this scholarship is to encourage top students to continue with their Japanese study at tertiary level and to consider combining it with another discipline. Preference will be given to those studying a conjoint degree or double major, but not at the exclusion of those who are studying a Japanese specific degree.
