About the scholarship
Te Reo o te Hākui - The language of the mother. Hākui is mother in the southern Ngāi Tahu dialect. Offered through New Horizons for Women Trust: Hine Kahukura, the award is valued at $1,000.00 and is sponsored by the O’Regan and Johnson whānau. The award is for women over the age of 25 enrolled in a Te Reo Māori course or qualification with Te Reo Māori components, through any institution and living anywhere in Aotearoa New Zealand. It is a one off grant to help with study, travel and/or living expenses. It may be used in combination with funding from other sources.

Entry requirements
The award is to support the successful recipient to learn, use and promote Te Reo in her whānau and community. The award can also be for a woman studying for a bi-cultural qualification that has a Te Reo Māori component such as a teaching qualification (Mātauranga Māori/Medium), Bicultural Social Work or Bachelor of Nursing -Māori.
In deciding the award, preference will be given to: Women who are working or volunteering in kōhanga, kura kaupapa, with rangatahi and or with marae Women with no previous tertiary qualifications
