About the scholarship
The Rotary Club of Wellington North offers a number of study grants (scholarships) each year through the Scholarship Trust. The Trust was formed in 1992 by the Club, with the aim of assisting individuals who can demonstrate financial hardship with the cost of tertiary education, vocational training or the development of life skills. The grants are available to students from the Wellington Region but can be utilized for study in any institution. In some cases, the grant may cover aspects of overseas study. The Trustees invite applications from individuals within the Wellington region who, because of financial hardship, need assistance to enable them to undertake a tertiary or vocational education programme or a life skills course. The Trustees will take account of financial hardship, academic records, and community service and sporting achievements. Greater Wellington includes the following regions: Kapiti, Carterton, Masterton, South Wairarapa, Upper Hutt, Lower Hutt, Porirua and Wellington Regions". Last year, grants between $3,000 and $5,000 each were distributed to 12 students out of 38 applicants. About $60,000 is distributed each academic year.
How To Apply
Presentation is key: A successful application is always carefully and clearly presented, and printed on clean, white paper. You want to give a good impression and spelling mistakes or illegible writing will not help you do that. Before you send your application in, ask a family member or friend to proof-read it for you. They may find a mistake that you just didn't pick up.
- It must be neat and legible! Don't be messy! It doesn't help your cause when you send in a sloppy application, with misspellings and grammar issues. If you hand in an application that is a mess; you may be giving the scholarship reader a reason not to consider you, especially if there are other applicants who took the time to put together a neat, well-organized scholarship application. It can make a difference, so be careful with this aspect;
- Read the directions carefully and follow the directions: Be sure to always follow the rules, no matter how tiny or arbitrary, and to observe appropriate scholarship application etiquette. Be polite and recognise that you are asking someone to help you. If you do not know what is meant by ‘scholarship application etiquette’ then ask someone what it means;
- Pay Attention to the Details: provide all the information asked for and don’t expect the reader to look up your address or compile your application;
- Referees: ask people who know you and get their permission to include their name in your application: If a referee does not know you, they simply cannot talk about your good points and strengths.
- Get help filling out the scholarship application! Ask your teacher, school counsellor, or family member to help you with the application.
- Get the application in on time! Applications will close 31st October 2020. Enquiries to: Terry Pinfold, Convenor Scholarship Committee, at; Convenor
