About the scholarship

Applications are invited from students enrolled in Master of Design theses for grants to support research conducted at the Auckland War Memorial Museum Library. The research will make extensive use of the documentary heritage resources of the Museum Library, Te Pataka Matapuna, a repository for manuscripts and archives, photographs, ephemera, maps, and publications including early newspapers. The successful applicant will have a primary supervisor who is an academic staff member in the School of Art and Design, Faculty of Design and Creative Industries, Auckland University of Technology and will have a secondary supervisor from the Curatorial or Collection Management team at the Museum. The successful applicant will have fortnightly supervision meetings with their supervisory team as well as guided access to the Documentary Heritage collections.

How To Apply

  1.   Written applications will be considered by a committee consisting of representatives from the postgraduate department of the School of Art and Design, Faculty of Design and Creative Industries, Auckland University of Technology and the Auckland War Memorial Museum Library.                                    2.       Applicants are encouraged to seek the support of an academic staff member in their discipline area in preparing their application, and are required to include a letter of recommendation from this academic staff member  in their application.  3.       Applications should demonstrate that the applicant has already provisionally investigated the resources available in the Auckland Museum’s Documentary Heritage Collections. The Library’s catalogue is available at aucklandmuseum.com/collections  4.       The application must contain the following: a research question (provided by the Curatorial or Collection Management Team at Auckland Museum), an indicative list of the documentary heritage material to be consulted at the Museum Library, how the grant will support the research, and a supporting letter from an academic staff member in their discipline.

This year, preference will be given to students developing research interests which make extensive use of the Museum Documentary Heritage collections, all of which offer rich opportunities for MDes students.
