James Henry Scholarship

The Scholarships were established by a bequest from the late Rev. James Henry, MA (Aberdeen, 1866), who was born at Foveran, Aberdeenshire, on 26 March 1846. Mr Henry arrived in New Zealand in 1873 and was Presbyterian minister of the Matuarua parish from 1874 to 1884, and of the Lauder parish from 1884 to 1891, when he resigned from the ministry. He lived for some time in Waikawa and from 1898 until 1917 in Invercargill, where he tutored pupils in ancient and modern languages and mathematics. He died in Sydney on 14 December 1919.

In his will Mr Henry directed that the income of the residue of his estate should be accumulated by the Public Trustee for 20 years from the date of his death and that thereafter one-third of the income should be applied towards scholarships tenable at the University of Otago.
