About the scholarship

The HOPE-SELWYN Foundation Scholarships are intended to support scientists in the early stages of their careers conducting research into ageing. The name of the scholarships recognises the partnership between The HOPE Foundation for Research on Ageing and The Selwyn Foundation. The HOPE Foundation for Research on Ageing is a non-Government funded Charitable Trust established to prepare New Zealand for an ageing future. The mission of the HOPE Foundation is to:

  • Lead and resource the funding of people doing research on ageing
  • Disseminate research-based information about the effects of ageing on individuals and society
  • Develop the pool of researchers in New Zealand
  • Influence decision-makers to improve the quality of life for ageing New Zealanders. The Selwyn Foundation is an independent charitable trust and one of the largest charitable providers of care to older people in New Zealand. Both Foundations seek to encourage research into ageing phenomena both individual and societal, because they believe that as the nation ages, many issues will arise that will have to be addressed in order to assist New Zealand Society to cope with the effects of the ageing population. In this way the Foundations seek to help prepare New Zealand for an ageing future. This Scholarship for research into postgraduate aging will be offered for study at AUT in the year following application and will be funded by the HOPE and Selwyn Foundations.

How To Apply

Application for the scholarship is through the AUT online portal which will be available from a link at the top of this page. To complete the application process all required documentation must be included. Incomplete or late applications are not able to be submitted and will not be forwarded to the selection panel. The following documents or statements will need to be uploaded and submitted with the application by 11.55pm on the closing date.

  • A brief (no more than two pages) outline of the proposed research
  • Evidence that ethical approval for the proposed research has been applied for or approved
  • A photo of the applicant for the Foundations’ use for publicity purposes.
  • An indication of Budget and how the grant will be spent Applications must be submitted online by 30 Octobe

Entry requirements

All applicants for these scholarships must: -Be New Zealand citizens or permanent residents -Be enrolled and have paid the fees, or arranged to pay the fees, for a full-time or part-time master's thesis/dissertation, or doctoral thesis at AUT University on a topic related to ageing. Applications will be accepted from a wide range of disciplines in line with the HOPE Foundation's philosophy of encouraging eclectic research into ageing and its effects on individuals and society.
