About the scholarship
The ‘Ko Te Tangata’ Scholarship (Waikato Schools) is the University of Waikato scholarship for the secondary schools of the Waikato region. The University of Waikato was established thanks to the drive and determination of the people of the Waikato. It is now a vital part of the regional and national economy and a leading tertiary provider with an established record of excellence in teaching and research. This Scholarship, named ‘for the people’, recognises the University’s strong connection and commitment to the schools and communities of the districts within the Waikato region, including (in alphabetical order): Hamilton City, Hauraki District, Matamata-Piako District, Otorohanga District, South Waikato District, Thames-Coromandel District, Waikato District, Waipa District, and parts of Rotorua, Taupo and Waitomo Districts. The Scholarship will be awarded primarily on the basis of evidence of academic readiness (NCEA Level 2 results), leadership, and strong community spirit. The Scholarship also recognises that for many prospective students, family and financial circumstances are factors that may hinder the opportunity to study at university, and special consideration will be given to applicants who demonstrate serious financial hardship and/or extraordinary personal circumstances.
Entry requirements
For school leaver and gap year students who are NZ citizens or permanent residents, studying at NCEA Level 3 (or equivalent) at a secondary school within the Waikato region (see map in Appendix 1 of the regulations), and intending to enrol full-time (120 points) in an undergraduate degree at the University of Waikato for the first time in the year of tenure.
