Nelson and Tasman are actually two separate regions located at the top of the South Island but are often considered one as Nelson is the smallest region by area in New Zealand. The Nelson region does not fully encompass the urban area of the city of Nelson, meaning that the town of Richmond, which is considered an area of Nelson City for statistical purposes, is in the Tasman region. The local rugby team, Tasman Makos, play at Trafalgar Park in Nelson although it is not in Tasman.

The region is famous for its high sun hours, agriculture, vineyards and tourism thanks to the picturesque Abel Tasman National Park. The main centres in the region are Nelson-Richmond, Motueka and Wakefield.
