About the course

Learn professional table service, barista skills, cash handling and front-of-house. Start to build your knowledge of menus and beverages. Wear a professional uniform and get experience working in our training restaurant and serving customers in our café.

This programme provides students with the knowledge and skills to begin work as a professional waiter or barista.

Programme outline

Gain experience in our training café, serving paying customers hot and cold beverages as well as baking products. Work closely with cookery students and provide table and food service during evening productions, including serving beverages during and after the meal service.*

Graduates can progress their study on the New Zealand Certificate in Food and Beverage Service (Level 4) Restaurant Services (offered by WelTec) or New Zealand Certificate in Cookery (Level 3 or Level 4) or enter the workforce with the core skills, knowledge and personal attributes to work as service personnel within the food and beverage sectors, particularly as waiters in restaurants providing table service, and as baristas in a range of hospitality establishments.

Students wanting to study Food and Beverage Level 4 through WelTec can access our free bus service to travel between campuses. 

*During evening productions, regular class times change to a 2pm start, finishing between 9 and 10pm.


Entry criteria

NCEA Level 1 numeracy and literacy.

International students

Minimum IELTS score 5.5, with no band score lower then 5.
