Course details

Bachelor of Health Science (Paramedic) [For Working or Volunteering Paramedics]

About the course

Gain a qualification that recognises the knowledge and skills required to provide emergency and medical care as a paramedic.

The FLS strand is offered to students that are currently engaged with a recognised New Zealand ambulance service provider and who hold an industry qualification: the New Zealand Diploma in Ambulance Practice (Level 5) and a delegated authority to practice (ATP) at a minimum of Emergency Medical Technician (EMT).

Programme Outline

The Bachelor of Health Science (Paramedic) degree is delivered in partnership with Wellington Free Ambulance and is approved by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority, the Council of Ambulance Authorities and Paramedics Australasia.  Graduates may go on to complete postgraduate study.

This programme is delivered by blended learning i.e. online and compulsory block courses.  Theory is completed by distance via Moodle (our online learning platform), this will require you to have a computer and internet access at home.  Students will also need to be able to study from home should Covid-19 Alert Levels change.

You will need to budget for travel and accommodation for block courses and we strongly recommend that before confirming travel, accommodation and/or placements, you ensure that your study plans have been approved by Whitireia.

As an applied qualification, there is a significant component of practical work.  As part of your study, you will complete clinical portfolio, based on your work with the ambulance service you are working or volunteering for. This work may be covered by your normal roster or may require additional emergency ambulance shifts, double or triple-crewed, with an appropriately qualified paramedic or ICP.  It is the responsibility of the student to arrange this in consultation with their Line Manager; students can discuss this further with their tutors.

Students applying for FLS need to go through a credit recognition process to determine their point of entry into the programme.
