About the course
Whitireia and WelTec offer a NEW joint degree in Information Technology. The degree was designed with the IT industry to ensure our graduates are well-prepared with the skills required for the 21st century. The NEW degree offers five new majors and provides a well-rounded education designed for today's IT workplaces. In addition to the technical skills, You'll learn communication skills, management processes, teamwork and complete an industry project in your final year. This degree has been accredited by the industry, represented by IT Professionals New Zealand.
The programme prepares learners with well-developed knowledge, skills and attributes for IT employment. Students may select a specific major endorsement for their study or may choose to study the unendorsed Bachelor of Information Technology, which has no specified major. The award of the degree states the major endorsement:
- Bachelor of Information Technology
- Bachelor of Information Technology (Software Development Major)
- Bachelor of Information Technology (Applied Data Science Major)
- Bachelor of Information Technology (Cyber Security Major)
- Bachelor of Information Technology (Interaction Design Major)
- Bachelor of Information Technology (Networking and Infrastructure Major)
Potential Career options
Graduates of the Bachelor of Information Technology have detailed knowledge and skills in selected areas of IT for employment as an IT professional. Opportunities within the IT industry include employment in public organisations, private companies, IT enterprises, self-employment, and teaching.
Depending on the course set chosen by students, graduate opportunities include:
Cyber Security
Security analyst, security administrator, incident responder, information assurance analyst, or other information/cybersecurity-related roles, including support roles such as service desk.
Applied Data Science
Business intelligence analyst, data management and analytics, database developer, marketing data analytics, systems analyst, business, data analyst and reporting analyst.
Interaction Design
Product designer IT, designer in emerging technologies, IT test planning, user experience designer, user interface designer, user experience researcher, front-end web developer design integrator.
Networking and Infrastructure
Network engineer, systems engineer, systems engineer/cloud support, ICT support technician, network support, network administrator, or service desk support.
Software Development
Full stack developer, web developer, analyst programmer, business analyst, .Net developer, software developer, mobile application developer, game developer, system and software tester.

Entry Requirements
Under 20 Years
NCEA Level 3 with at least 14 credits in each of 3 subjects.
Literacy - 10 credits at Level 2 or above, made up of 5 credits in reading
and 5 credits in writing.
Numeracy - 10 credits at Level 1 or above.
Over 20 Years
If you’re 20 years or over, you may qualify for special admission on this programme. Contact us if you don’t meet the Under 20 entry criteria.
International Students:
Minimum IELTS (academic) score of 6 with no band score lower than 5.5.
