Based at Unitec campus Mount Albert

• Leadership skills • Technical skills including ropes course, mountain bike and tramping • Risk management • Group management • Facilitation skills

Developing personal skills and confidence in Outdoor Recreation activities. Developing leadership confidence. Identifying and managing hazards and risks. Communicating with individuals and groups. Operating under a framework of kaitiakitanga- Guardianship and environmental sustainabiity. This program will also support students going on American summer camps. You will prepare for specialist camp instructor and support roles. On completion of this program students will be trained in a range of activities including Abseil ,Challenge Ropes Course, Adventure Based Learning and group management.

The course will be led by an experienced outdoor education teacher and instructor and supported by our team of passionate and enthusiastic outdoor instructors.

You will need some basic outdoor equipment such as tramping boots, waterproof jacket, appropriate outdoor clothing. We have lots of equipment that we can help sort you out with if you don’t have this.

Each week will include a combination of classroom and outdoor learning. The classroom work will be based at Unitec, the outdoor activity learning will be in Auckland/Northland and Waikato regions. We will provide transport for off-site events.

This course as the first step towards further study and training in the outdoor education/recreation, adventure tourism and guiding industries. If you’re interested in further study it will serve as a recognised foundation for entry higher level courses.
