About the course
This programme offers students an opportunity to graduate with the skills to work in entry-level positions in the beauty therapy industry. Students will spend time applying practical skills in the Wintec Urban Spa and will also undertake work based learning at a beauty therapy clinic, working alongside beauty therapists in the industry. Students will learn a range of beauty services and the required professional practices required to be a beauty therapist including; spray tanning, waxing, nails, makeup, facials and eye enhancement treatments. Alongside these practical skills, students will be developing their knowledge of anatomy and physiology relevant to these beauty therapy services and building their understanding of the chemistry behind beauty therapy products.

Entry requirements
You can apply for this programme if you meet one of the below options.
Based on your school achievement (secondary school study)
- 40 credits at NCEA Level 2; including 10 literacy credits at NCEA Level 2, 10 numeracy credits at NCEA Level 1 and 14 credits in a science subject at NCEA Level 2;
- Or a recognised equivalent.
Based on study completed after school (tertiary study)
- A relevant course at NZQF Level 2;
- Or a recognised equivalent.
Based on discretionary entrance
If you don't meet any of the above options, and you think you have what it takes to complete this programme, you can apply for discretionary entrance. Your application may be accepted if you can demonstrate a good chance of success. Approval of discretionary entrance applications is decided by the relevant manager. If your application is approved, your acceptance into further programmes relies on you demonstrating success in this programme.
Selection criteria
Students who do not meet the admission requirements may be required to attend an interview to assess their suitability in-order to successfully complete Certificate in Beauty Services (Level 4). They may be enrolled with discretionary entrance and be required to have a personal learning plan that may include a requirement to attend student support e.g. Te Kete Konae or Student Learning Services. In addition, students who have previously been enrolled in, but have not completed the Certificate in Beauty Services (Level 4) programme will only be considered for admission if they:
- Attended at least 80% of the directed learning hours in the Certificate in Beauty Services (Level 4) programme; and
- Successfully completed all work-based learning hours in the Certificate in Beauty Services (Level 4) programme.
English language requirements
Candidates who have English as a second language are required to have an International English Language Test System (IELTS) score of 5.5 in the academic band, with no individual band score lower than 5; or equivalent.
*This course is not available to international students.
