About the course
Graduates of the MIT Certificate in Adult Education and Training (Foundation Educators) will be able to: describe adult literacy in Aotearoa New Zealand, including in relation to the training or education programme; describe M+óori literacy; identify literacy demands of the programme; identify literacy strengths and needs of individual learners in the programme; integrate literacy skill development into the delivery of the programme; use literacy teaching strategies to promote adult literacy skill development in the programme; assess learner literacy progress in the programme; evaluate effectiveness of literacy teaching strategies and learning activities and any specialist adult literacy support in the programme. value diversity and have developed appropriate attitudes and culturally safe practices to work in a multicultural environment; demonstrate the skills to be able to access literature in the field of literacy; AND depending on electives chosen, graduates will also be able to: If including the Applied Teaching ESOL Certificate elective understand the theoretical linguistic knowledge base on which to develop and design lessons and courses specific to the language development of their students; have an understanding of socio-linguistic factors in language development; access the technical resources available to language teachers OR If including the Teaching Academic Literacy Skills to Culturally Diverse Classes elective; Define a culturally inclusive learning environment; Apply principles of academic literacy and culturally sensitive teaching to their own classroom OR If including the unit from the National Certificate in Adult Literacy for Educators elective, Operate as an adult literacy educator in one or more specialist context(s) OR If including the MIT Certificate of Achievement in Principles of Tertiary Teaching (1) elective, Plan and deliver a lesson for diverse learners in a tertiary teaching elective
