About the course

On completion of this programme graduates will be able to apply for entry to the Nurse Assistant scope of practice in Long Term Care and Rehabilitation, Perioperative Care, or Acute Care. All graduates with the Certificate in Nursing (Specialty Focus) will be able to:; safely care for clients/patients under the direction of a Registered Nurse.; show a broad understanding of the New Zealand health care system.; demonstrate knowledge of legislation directly related to health care delivery and client/patient rights.; maintain professional boundaries with clients/patients and other health workers.; contribute to the effective delivery of a quality health service.; communicate effectively on an interpersonal level within the health care team.; communicate at a therapeutic level with clients/patients and families.; function effectively as a Nurse Assistant in Aotearoa New Zealand in a way which is acceptable to the tangata whenua.; within the Nurse Assistant role, practise in a manner which would be described as culturally safe by the recipient of nursing care.; appropriately challenge situations which compromise client/patient safety, privacy or dignity.; work co-operatively and collaboratively with members of the health care team.; accept responsibility and be accountable for their own practice.; practise within the ethical and legal parameters of a Nurse Assistant maintaining professional standards of practice.; be responsible for their own continuing professional development and education.; be informed about current issues and trends in health care which impact on their practice.; identify change in clients/patients and appropriately respond to and report changing condition.; review and evaluate the appropriateness of their practice and their contribution to client/patient health outcomes.
